I can’t believe August is here already.   The imminent arrival of Labor Day brings thoughts of shorter days, longer nights and “cold” just around the corner!  But there’s still a lot of summer fun to be had.  Have you been to one of the Sunday evening concerts on the Green yet?  The music has been wonderful, the food sold by our many local organizations is for good causes, and the camaraderie of a community relaxing together enjoyable.  You still have two opportunities to enjoy a concert.  Not your thing?

How about the family campout coming up next weekend at Cohen Woodlands?  Friday night movies on the Green?  Or a quick walk, run, or bike ride on the Airline Trail?  A day at the splash park, wading in Salmon River, fishing, swimming, hiking – there’s still time for all of it.  Or for a change of pace, shop the Sunday afternoon Farmer’s Market at Priam Vineyards, visit Cato Corner Farms or our many farm stands offering the freshest produce imaginable, or enjoy an afternoon snack on the outdoor decks of our restaurants.  Take a few moments to visit our local businesses – we have several shops that offer unique items that can be found no where else.  Begin your holiday shopping today!

Mark your calendars today for a few September happenings.  The annual celebration of our community, the 57 Fest, is slated for September 27.  Never say that one citizen cannot make a difference!  Alexandra McGrath came forward with an idea, presented it to the necessary decision makers, and volunteered to chair it.  Now she and her committee are hard at work organizing and working to encourage Colchester’s organizations and businesses to be part of the first ever 57 Fest parade in celebration of Colchester where “Tradition Meets Tomorrow.”

On a more serious note, the Board of Selectmen and Board of Finance will be holding a joint meeting with the Elderly Tax Relief Task Force (ETRTF) on September 23rd to provide the ETRTF direction regarding whether a tax abatement or relief program that will not be revenue neutral should be researched and considered.~ As we’ve discussed over the past several months, the tax deferral program that was recently increased is revenue neutral.~ The next step is to decide whether to allocate funds to the program and, if so, how much.

Please accept my ongoing invitation for my “Coffees with Linda”, which are scheduled for Thursday, August 7, 2008 at Family Pizza on South Main Street from 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at Café Mangia on Linwood Avenue from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., and Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at Café on Main on Main Street from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
The coffees offer an opportunity for all of you to drop by and chat about anything that is on your mind. Bring your questions, comments, suggestions… and even better, your ideas. See you soon!
